My research interests focus on the evolution of fossil amphibians and small reptiles from China, on their morphological evolution and ontogenetic development (particularly osteological), systematics and phylogeny, and paleobiogeographic reconstruction. Current research is mainly on the well-preserved and mostly articulated frogs, salamanders, and lizards of the Early Cretaceous Jehol Biota and of associated earlier horizons (e.g. Jurassic Daohugou Bed). The fossil localities are mainly in northeastern China (Liaoning, Hebei Provinces and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region). Other on-going work includes lizards and temnospondyl amphibians from the Jurassic of Xinjiang Autonomous Region and frogs from Cenozoic localities in eastern and southern China.

I’m curious about various aspects of the evolution of birds during the Mesozoic Era, a critical phase when birds split from the dinosaur branch and evolved the bauplan of modern birds. In doing so, I’m collecting comparative anatomical, histological and ontogenetic data to infer the taxonomy, phylogeny, ontogeny and ecology of Mesozoic birds. Also, Cenozoic bird fossils are my favorite if they are not that boring.
